The best thing to do first is to work as an assistant for someone who already has their own event planning business. Starting from scratch would be difficult mostly because no one would hire someone without any experience.

Most places in the U.S. will require you to purchase an annual business license from your local city and the state. That will allow you to collect the appropriate taxes. You should also talk to an accountant to set up your books. Lastly, I highly recommend purchasing professional liability insurance.
